Benefits of Having a Macaw as Pet

The entertainment value and charisma of the macaw are among the benefits. Essentially, having the bird at home makes your living room a pleasant place to be. You will be looking forward to getting home and having some fun time with the pet.

With the proper care and depending on the breed of the macaw, the birds can live up to 90 years, especially the Scarlet Macaw, making them the perfect lifetime companion.

After building trust, these birds are social and affectionate. The relationship you create can be better than any other, and that can have positive effects on your health and quality of life.

They are also fun to feed and easy to maintain. Macaws naturally feed on leaves, flowers, fruit seeds, and nectar. Ready-made bird food is also appropriate for them.

The birds are also naturally intelligent and can learn a few tricks quickly and effectively. They become the best companion at home.

Body Language of the Macaws

If their pupils are dilating, then the macaw is either excited or nervous. They are usually ready to bite when fanning their tail and dilating the pupils. This is often the best time to keep off or change behavior.

On the other hand, regurgitation is a way of demonstrating the love of affection. They also blush when they want to mate or when excited. Shivering or quivering indicates that the bird is afraid of something or just nervous. You will need to speak to the macaw in a reassuring tone, or voice.

Young macaws will open bite because they are usually teething. Give them something instead, such as a wooden toy or object.

Macaw Cage Buying Considerations - What Should You Search in a Cage?

Macaws are active birds, and they will need sufficient space to play and enjoy. Don't get the cage that is too small, rest the bird becomes uncomfortable. It is also vital that the space between bars is not too big. Ideally, the cage should also be comfortable and robust so that it can last for a long time. Remember that the lifespan of macaws is quite long, and they will need a familiar place for a significant amount of time.

The cage should also be easy to maintain and clean. Don't forget to buy something easy to assemble and use. You don't want something that you are going to spend a significant amount of time trying to figure out.

How Big Should A Macaw Cage Be?

Blue macaw cage size recommendation is 48 inches deep, 36 inches wide and 60 inches tall. The bar spacing should be below 1.5 inches. This pretty much also applies to gold macaw cage size.

Macaw Cage Setup

Invest in the best quality stainless steel cage or any other suitable material. An enclosure with multiple doors and a slide-out tray is essential for cleaning and maintenance. Remember that macaws prefer low traffic areas and somewhere with a good view. Maybe close to a window, but it should be away from direct sunlight.

Bathrooms and kitchen are not the best places for the cage. The bottom of the enclosure should be lined with a newspaper and don't use wood shavings or shredded paper unless you want to make a mess around the cage area.

Macaws require between 8 and 10 hours of sleep. If necessary, get a cover to block the light, especially if you are a night owl.

How to Clean Macaw Cage?

Clean the food and water dishes daily and rinse off with hot water. Use a clean towel to dry the dishes completely. Don't forget to wash the other accessories such as swings and ladders with warm water and soap.

Replace the old liner with a layer of newspapers without any ink. About seven layers will be sufficient to catch the droppings and other debris in the cage. And depending on the size of the cage and the number of birds, you must sanitize it regularly. If it is a small cage, then once per month will be sufficient. On the other hand, sanitize weekly if the cage is big and holds several birds.
